The Montreal Show Behind Pink Floyd’s Wall

Pink Floyd ended the In the Flesh tour at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium on July 6, 1977. The scale of the audience had become part of the problem the band was confronting, rather than simply a sign of success.

The group’s official history describes a rowdy final-night crowd and Roger Waters reacting angrily to provocation. Afterward, he began examining the distance between rock performers and the people watching them. The image of a wall separating the two became central to the project that followed.

The Wall was not performed at Olympic Stadium that night. The concert belonged to the Animals touring period. Its significance lies in what it prompted: a troubling encounter between band and audience that became a starting point for Pink Floyd’s next album.
