Led Zeppelin’s First Toronto Show at the Rock Pile

Led Zeppelin made its first Toronto appearance on February 2, 1969 at the Rock Pile. The name matters: the room inside the Masonic Temple at 888 Yonge Street was operating as the Rock Pile then, decades before the same building became known as The Concert Hall.

Roughly 1,200 people attended two sets as the band’s debut album was beginning to break. The repertoire included “Train Kept a Rollin’,” “Dazed and Confused,” “You Shook Me” and “How Many More Times.”

The performance belongs to the history of both names. The Rock Pile identifies the 1969 promoter and era; The Concert Hall identifies the room visitors know today. Together they connect an early Zeppelin date to one of Toronto’s longest-running music buildings.
