Bob Dylan Opened the Met Philadelphia’s New Chapter

On December 3, 2018, Bob Dylan performed at the reopening of the Met Philadelphia. A $56 million renovation had prepared the historic building for another chapter of live performance, with Dylan supplying the opening-night bill.
The venue began as Hammerstein’s opera house in 1908. Its restoration combined the preservation of historic features with the practical changes needed to bring audiences and touring productions back into the building.
The concert gives that long architectural story a clear modern marker. The Met’s return can be dated to a particular show, rather than only to the completion of construction. More than a century after its original opening, the building had an audience again for a new musical era.
